Who Belongs? Immigrants, Refugees, Asylum Seekers in the 21st Century
(reading and panel discussion with Valerie Lapin, Melatu Uche Okorie, and Éanlaí Cronin) – details
Originally from Co Antrim, Yvonne Watterson emigrated to the United States in 1988 and settled in the desert southwest, where she now works as Director of Education Innovation for the Arizona Charter Schools Association. Yvonne has been recognized nationally for her work in school reform and for her activism in immigration. As editor of Documented Dreams, a bilingual collection of letters written by her undocumented students, Yvonne helped bring to light the plight of young people caught in America’s shattered immigration system. She continues to advocate for an immigration system that is just and humane. A free-lance writer and blogger, Yvonne contributes regularly to the Irish Times, offering perspective on issues that affect us as an immigrant living in America. Her personal blog, Considering the Lilies . . . and Lessons from the Field explores issues that are relevant to the Diaspora – the poetry of Seamus Heaney and the music of Van Morrison make frequent appearances.
